I am interested in close inspection of the natural world, and the intersection between self and other. These two interests result in two different art styles.
When I create abstract art I allow total freedom of color and form to manifest beneath my brush. I am drawn to lush colors and vivid invocations of texture and tone. These pieces are high quality acrylics on gallery-width canvas, ranging from 10x10" to 3x4'.
Using pen and ink, I render plants, lichens, insects, and birds. Drawing from illustration and impressionism, my work is more evocative and emotive than pure illustration yet I strive to render each organism true to its form.
Integrated poetry and art
All my life I have been looking at the fine details of the natural world. As a botanist, my eye for detail has buoyed my career. Plants aren't just something pretty to look at, they are what sustains all life on earth. Aside from life-sustaining properties, plants offer endless fascination. Here is a snapshot of earth's elegant palate.
Present in earth's vast splendor, exploring and becoming.
A lichen is a symbiosis between one or two fungal species and a green algae and/or cyanobacteria. Their successful partnership spans the rainbow, and their form is wildly variable. They flourish across continents, from deserts to rainforests to below snow at the poles.
